Space saving wifi dongle for the Luckfox Lyra

Post by odie »

So I will receive a PicoCalc hopefully this summer and I plan to modify it to a Cyberdeck. A documented solution is to replace the original Pi Pico with a Luckfox Lyra to run Linux on this thing. The version I bought doesn't have built-in wifi but a weird tiny USB port. The solution is to buy a JST SH 1,25 mm to USB A (female) adapter, then plug a wifi dongle in. This is an attempt to build it cheaper and more compact.

After removing the usb dongle's enclosure:

Soldered the 4 pin JST SH 1,25 mm to the PCB:

Some heat-shrink tubing for the professional look (and isolation):

And here's the result:

Now I will try to install Linux on it and get wifi running so I can just swap the hole thing as soon as the PicoCalc will be delivered.

Ohhh very very cool looking!

Wish I was able to actually work with customising electronics, seems like such a rewarding thing to do :)

Please keep us posted on the progress, I'd love to see the process and end result odie :)

Apparently its not too difficult, you can even use a angle grinder to modify boards and stuff. As evidenced by James Channel:
