What can I do with a VPS?

Self-hosting, home labs, privacy, security, Linux, FreeBSD and FOSS. The good stuff.

What can I do with a VPS?

Post by sage_rakurai »

Step 1.
Buy a domain name and connect it to a $6/month VPS

Step 2.
???

What should I do with it?

I could...

  • Put a mumble server on it
  • Make a blog (but I have little in mind to write about)
  • Single-user Mastodon instance?

I self-host a few things on my local machine but was trying to think of things that would be useful/fun for others to see.

IRC bouncer?

Petkeljärven rantaan vie kivikkoinen Kyymäentie, vaan yhä vielä siitä saa Hevonkuuseen matkustaa

I have a BNC (soju), Limnoria (bot based on the OG supybot)and Zipline (simple file hosting with URL shortening) all running via Docker for IRC related shenanigans along with Watchtower to keep them updated and Portainer for easy access. I ssh in, run a bash script that either reconnects to an existing tmux session containing Weechat or creates a new one and attaches. I created a zip.* sub-domain for my Zipline instance, and use that as a basic filedump etc.

Can also host your own instance of Vaultwarden for password management, but then you'd need to ensure an adequate backup is implemented too :)

I second an IRC bouncer, Soju is my choice too :)

I'll be pretty much permanently online nicely then.
