instead of starting a new topic for each game, i think we should have one main thread and then spin it off as necessary. so, here's a thread to talk about anything gaming.

i've been thinking about trying to design my own game recently, i want to make some sort of sports-like game which can be played with fake "baseball cards" with stats on them, so that i can take my characters and put them in a game, maybe convince someone else to do the same and then we can trade.

so far i'm thinking it could work like craps where you have a target number you're trying to roll, and each character has a "lucky number" that's either good or bad depending on what you're doing. like maybe your lucky number is 8 so if you roll an 8 while at bat then it's an automatic home run, but if the pitcher rolls an 8 instead then it's a strike, or something like that? i need to put something on paper so i can iterate on it.

more progress on Ychball. made these player aids for calculating the points scored on a hit ball. you get some amount of BASE times some amount of POW, just like in balatro :)

I like to carry a bag of small game pieces around with me. Here's what I've got in my backpack right now! The whole thing fits in this medium-sized cloth bag from WNY Gaming from back where I grew up.

Inside, I'm carrying some unfolded zedges, my custom made backgammon bandana, some reusable silicone muffin wrappers, a deck of high-contrast cards, a smaller cloth bag full of dice, and a plastic bag with some blank dry-erase cards, markers, and those little plastic standee clips.

These dice are 12mm by the way, so they're a little smaller than the 16mm dice that come standard in D&D sets. Sometimes people ask me "why no d20?" and the answer is just that I never use it! If I'm playing a d20-based game I'm usually bringing a totally different bag to that game with character sheets and stuff.

Here's the bandana on its own, by the way. I'm almost out of these, I should order another batch and put 'em on etsy or something, people seem to like this design. I also have plans to someday replace the chessboard side with something more thematically appropriate such as a ludo (parcheesi) board. Would you be more likely to buy this with the chess board on the back or the ludo board, do you think?

The games I'm most excited to play with this kit are

• The Gang (uses cards and numbered tokens, dice should work as substitute)
• Wedge Zendo (uses zedges and black/white tokens, again using dice)
• Homeworlds (using zedges and hidden role cards, playing cards will work for this)
• Codenames (bit of a stretch but I think I could make this work using the dry-erase cards and some sort of word-picking app on my phone)
• Backgammon (I did dedicate a whole bandana just to this game!)
• Oh Hell (of all the trick-taking games, this one seems to do the best with an odd number of players, which comes up a lot)
