To POP or not to POP

Post by jadeia »

I've got an older Windows machine with a 3060 I'm repurposing as a Linux gaming rig. Been eyeing Pop!_OS mainly for its out-of-the-box Nvidia driver support.

Anyone running it long-term? Curious how it holds up for gaming day-to-day. I'm familiar with Fedora from my work laptops, but I know it takes some extra legwork to get Nvidia sorted - so Pop!_OS seems like the path of least resistance here. Being Ubuntu-based, I'd assume it's reasonably stable, but open to other suggestions if there's a better option for an Nvidia + gaming setup.

So, if I'm not mistaken, Fedora should be shipping the Nvidia drivers now ok, or at least should have an options to include them on install.

However, if you're looking for something more gaming oriented, Pop!_OS seems to have stalled in development a bit, therefore my suggestions would be either CachyOS that I'm using right now, they even have their own optimized version of Proton for Steam, or Bazzite.

Haven't personally used Bazzite yet, but I keep seeing great reviews for gaming as well.

I am glad I asked, I did not know Fedora was shipping with NVidia support, I thought you still had to handle that separately post-install. If true, I'd just go for KDE on the gaming PC and stay in the Fedora eco-system.

I'll check out Cachy too. My love hate relationship with distro hopping continues.

Just please do check if I was wrong, but if I remember correctly I didn't have to fiddle with Fedora much to get my 3090 going fine.

Other than that, I know the feeling when it comes to distro hopping, I am yet again thinking about hopping somewhere, maybe even back to Fedora :D

Update: it was easy.

During install Fedora KDE asked me if I wanted to enable third party repos. I said yes, it did some magic, and then the update page showed the Nvidia drivers available for install.

So now I have Fedora Gnome on my laptop for quick workflow, and KDE on the gaming rig.

Loving it so far, thanks again.

Very happy to hear that! :)

Btw, you have revived my itch to get back to Fedora again, even though there's nothing really wrong with CachyOS at all :D

Don't tell me anything, I'm so nicely settled with Cachy, but look at me now... Must... resist... the urge... to distrohop.. for now.

I did some reading and decided that its just not worth the hassle of start jumping right now, so I'll be staying on Debian. Morrowind works well, thats enough for me :D
