I've been extremely tempted to buy a usb optical drive for myself. they make inexpensive ones now that can read and write blank blu-ray discs, which go for about $1 each and hold over 25 GB (compare to a DVD which caps out around 4.7 GB)

of course I don't know if I have anything worth sharing over 4.7 GB... and for anything smaller than that, it's easier to email it... but it's the principle!!!

Yeah I've been thinking the same. If not for anything else... to make backup copies of pictures and others stuff I deem important enough to save. I know disc rot exists and the discs are not the most durable things in the world, but they are so cheap that if I make like 5 to 10 copies of the pictures I want to backup, it'll cost me peanuts and I'll have pretty good redundancy. Then I just have to make sure I do copies of them, about every 5 to 10 years or so. Currently all this "important" stuff is on 2 external harddrives that are one drop away from losing everything. My sisters dog already pulled one of them on the floor, thats why I have 2 instead of 3.

I've even been thinking about getting a floppy disk drive lol. Not for actually storing anything, but just to have fun. Maybe play a prank with some of the nerds I know. Like if they ask for a file, I'll put it on a floppy and give it to them "here you go, you are welcome."

blurays are much more resistant to disc rot, just toss a dessicant in the box, keep cold and away from the sun and you should be good for a decade

I got a bunch of used 4GB tf cards which I keep on a 3d-printed organizer in my wallet so if someone ever asks me for a file I can, in principle, pull out my phone, save the file to a card, and hand it to them.

it's true that floppy disks are much more antiquited, but you would be surprised how many people do not actually have a way to read a tf card other than by ejecting the one in their phone. so it's still a little funny.

you can get usb 2.0 tf readers for cheap, if you want to hand that out a minute later when they ask "how do I use this" :P
