  • 1 kg of beef and pork, if you are fancy you can mix in some lamb as well (note, not 1kg of each, but in total)

  • 2-3 carrots

  • A swede (not a Swedish person but a root vegetable thing)

  • 2-3 onions

  • 2 bay leafs

  • 10 whole black peppers

  • Water

  • Salt, about a teaspoonful

  • Rapeseed oil

  1. Cut the meat into 1.5-2cm cubes.

  2. Slice the swede, onions and carrots, I like chunkier stuff so I usually slice them into similar size as the meat cubes, but you do whatever you want.

  3. Put some oil on the pan and throw some salt in there as well. Fry the meat on the pan for a few minutes, until they get a little bit of color.

  4. Throw the vegetables, bay leafs and peppers into a oven pot. After frying the meats, add them into the pot.

  5. Add water on the pan you fried the meats on, bring to a boil. When it starts to boil, pour the water into the pot. The water should cover the stuff in the pot, but not more than that. Just enough to drown everyone equally.

  6. Cover the pot, put into a oven at 200 degrees Celsius for 3 hours. Mix things up once or twice during the stewing process, check the saltiness at some point.

Serve with mashed potatoes. (note that mashed potatoes should have salt, butter and cream in them.)

What part of the cow or pig are we aiming for here?

Doesn't matter really. Whatever you like the most.

Its a peasant food, don't be too fussy about things. Some recipes include meat with bones, liver, intestines, tongue etc.

I grew up eating the one with bones included.

Yeah, its a traditional Finnish peasant food. Not a lot of spices up here until recently.

Use quality and fresh ingredients and you wont have to cover the bad, rotten taste with a kilo of spices ;)
