the problem with forums is that you can't edit other people's posts.

this might sound silly but consider why people entrust so much knowledge to Discord.

a common case is a "tech support discord" where people get help with a piece of free software. people are probably going to repeat the same problems repeatedly until they get answered, right? and those answers are likely to be buried in the chat history. you can tell people "search first before asking" but software can change so maybe the old answer doesn't work anymore, what do you do then? you have to keep correcting people. what if you could edit the answer whenever something is changed or discovered? that's exactly what wikis are great for!

i also think it would be cool if we had a 'quote database' and it feels like a good way to start that would be as a wiki page :3

I see what you mean, and it does make sense.

What we do have is Git that we already use for documentation and anyone could actually make a PR request to it, or fork an "article" to make changes.

The thing with Git is that it also has a nice change history (Wiki does as well), but do check out MansionNET Guides and let me know how you like it

i will absolutely do that! although i do want to clarify that i don't just want a wiki for technical users, though. the thing im specifically looking for is to use a wiki as a sort of communal writing surface for games, art, fiction and nonfiction... like, if someone wanted to compile all their racing data into a spreadsheet, a wiki would be preferable to, say, google docs :P

git is nice but ive worked at companies that say 'just update the repo!' before and ive noticed that 95% of users just dont bother. its too high of a barrier for the type of play i want to capture.

What about the git you think is too technical?

Can you also expand a bit of what you want to do with it. Writing surface to develop games? To just list facts, tips and tricks and stats about games? Art, as in analyze art or..? Fiction, as in group writing projects, plot summaries?

honestly, i haven't really played around enough to know what other people want it for. i just have a hunch it'll really encourage creativity in a way that forums alone do not. you don't get stuff like SCP or The Cutting Room Floor unless people have a away to collaborate on writing together.

personally, i would probably use this for:

• listing quotes i heard on irc
• playing Zendo via posting images of each turn (you can also do this by editing posts but i think it would get unwieldy fairly quick?)
• "pinned" content for irc (like if someone shares something really cool and I don't want it to get buried immediately).

and specifically my issue with git is purely that i think it adds too much friction to editing. if our git forge supports creating files, editing, and uploading files right from the web interface, then maybe that's a good enough substitute for a wiki? as long as there's no "approval" process like at work, that always drags things down.

my hypothetical here is "i have friends who are less technical than me and i don't want them to feel like they're not smart enough to edit a page". its gotta be possible to use without looking anything up or typing on a command line -- everything you need should be Right There on the page, just like how the BBCode editor on this forum has the helpful list of shortcuts at the top for stuff like bold and image embeds.
